the ecclesiology of a social 00:03:14.560 --> 00:03:19.920 media church uh and and there there was a little i don't call it a war but a little disagreement on my 00:03:19.920 --> 00:03:26.560 social media on my personal social media channel between a pastor friend of mine who i probably 00:03:26.560 --> 00:03:34.400 haven't seen in 20 years as well as uh a friend of mine that i've been working with in digital church 00:03:34.400 --> 00:03:40.640 stuff who i've never met in physical space it's all been digital as a matter of fact he's in africa 00:03:40.640 --> 00:03:46.320 so a personal friend of mine 20 years ago in africa it reads this comment about our personal friend of 00:03:46.320 --> 00:03:51.840 mine 20 years ago reads this comment about questioning a social media church and and he says things like 00:03:51.840 --> 00:03:57.360 jeff you can't do church on social media it's not the same uh and so and that was that's the mindset 00:03:57.360 --> 00:04:03.760 now it's it's an older pastor friend the guy was was it was a uh i was i mentored me in in many 00:04:03.760 --> 00:04:11.280 stretches and so love the influence and and love this pastor friend but he's not viewing community in 00:04:11.280 --> 00:04:18.640 in the same context at that my friend who's uh in africa who is connected through me connected with 00:04:18.640 --> 00:04:23.680 others in digital community they have completely different views and they started like getting 00:04:23.680 --> 00:04:29.200 into this little slap fight on my facebook channel it was really kind of funny uh to to watch just kind 00:04:29.200 --> 00:04:36.640 of afar to see how it was was was going to boil out here's what i would say facebook church or any digital 00:04:36.640 --> 00:04:43.680 church for that matter anything that we're doing in digital space is not for everyone uh my pastor 00:04:43.680 --> 00:04:51.760 friend 20 years ago uh that i that he was a a mentor in my life um yeah you know what digital church is 00:04:51.760 --> 00:04:56.640 probably not for you you're not connecting into that and and what's what's hard when we're talking 00:04:56.640 --> 00:05:02.800 about digital church and social media church a lot of the decision makers are of that age that aren't 00:05:02.800 --> 00:05:08.480 being influenced by digital community and aren't really understanding how digital community works 00:05:08.480 --> 00:05:15.360 and so it's not that uncommon to hear negative coming from leaders because they don't even 00:05:15.360 --> 00:05:21.840 understand really the context of what digital community is all they know is it's not the same 00:05:22.720 --> 00:05:28.880 and and and the frustrating part of that conversation is at this point even pre-covid 25 of americans are 00:05:28.880 --> 00:05:35.760 attending some representation of a physical church the number had dropped all the way down to 25 this is 00:05:35.760 --> 00:05:44.880 a pre-covid stat physical church it's safe to say evidently isn't for everyone either and so maybe 00:05:44.880 --> 00:05:50.160 while we're trying to do the same thing and get back to what was which was only effective 00:05:50.800 --> 00:05:58.240 church the beginning of the church the building of the 00:07:25.600 --> 00:07:32.560 church this is really the the first time that there's a synopsis for what the church functions or what we 00:07:32.560 --> 00:07:40.480 would say the ecclesiology of a church is they're using phrases here like baptism like prayer like making 00:07:40.480 --> 00:07:47.760 disciples love worship praise lord supper generous they're being giving there's apostles they're teaching of 00:07:47.760 --> 00:07:54.560 the word they're growing leaders there's devotion there's repenting of sins so according to the 00:07:54.560 --> 00:08:01.200 biblical standard when we look at what the church is out of acts two we would turn around and say okay 00:08:01.200 --> 00:08:07.600 we need to do all those in the physical space and to some level some things are better than others 00:08:07.600 --> 00:08:10.960 the physical church is doing these things but remember 00:08:11.840 --> 00:08:16.880 the physical church effectively today is only reaching 25 percent of americans so therefore 00:08:16.880 --> 00:08:22.240 maybe it's time to do something different which is why i'm asking questions like what would it look like 00:08:22.240 --> 00:08:28.400 to do all of this baptism prayer making disciples love worship praise communion generous giving apostles 00:08:28.400 --> 00:08:33.440 teaching teaching of the word growing leaders devotion repenting of sins what would it look like to do 00:08:33.440 --> 00:08:39.120 that on facebook on twitch what would it look like to do that well let's keep this in person to baptize is that a thing or does it need to be a pastor does it have 00:09:47.200 --> 00:09:52.240 to be in a church building or is it okay if it's going to be in like a a pool or a bathtub something 00:09:52.240 --> 00:09:55.920 like that but even questions like well what happens if somebody accepts christ that doesn't have 00:09:55.920 --> 00:09:59.920 any christian friends and is in a social media like we're not vocalizing our prayers and we're not gathered together uh in physical 00:10:24.320 --> 00:10:30.240 space where many are gathered together and so if if we're just typing prayers does god acknowledge 00:10:30.240 --> 00:10:36.640 our prayers uh or do we have to gather together physically to do that question three can social 00:10:36.640 --> 00:10:43.600 media be a place of love okay let's be honest like we we've all seen the the eros version of love and 00:10:43.600 --> 00:10:50.160 social media in the internet and digital is is filled with different types of sexuality and i don't need 00:10:50.160 --> 00:10:55.920 to go down that road uh but there's also another type of love where it's the echo chamber where we 00:10:55.920 --> 00:11:02.080 love so much of who we are we surround ourselves with friends and with sources and with content that's 00:11:02.080 --> 00:11:08.800 driven in that way where we don't see other people's views or even other people unless they look and sound 00:11:08.800 --> 00:11:16.240 and identify exactly the way that we do can social media be a place of love where it's not about eros 00:11:16.240 --> 00:11:22.800 or or where it's not about echo chamber but maybe where it's more about agape where it's self less 00:11:22.800 --> 00:11:33.040 love selfless not selfish maybe it's more sacrificial maybe it's more unconditional believe uh what's the heart of the people that are driving the social media is 00:14:22.080 --> 00:14:27.680 is it pointing towards god or is it pointing towards self uh and we'll unpack that in year pastor no it can't be uh and it really just depends on the context here like i said 00:15:25.440 --> 00:15:36.080 of how they view community my friend my pastor only sees people viewed when it's because the i think the church has been locked into a single method in a single 00:16:14.000 --> 00:16:22.240 way and while church has and while culture has evolved the church claiming to be the same yesterday today 00:16:22.240 --> 00:16:29.760 and forever jesus is has not evolved realizing that hey maybe jesus is the same but our methods need to 00:16:29.760 --> 00:16:36.240 evolve it was funny i'm just even flashing here on a leonard sweet uh quote from soul tsunami this is a book 00:16:36.240 --> 00:16:44.400 from maybe 20 years ago but talking about how there's more uh technology in a casio iron man wristwatch 00:16:44.960 --> 00:16:51.840 um this is the quotes from like 1990 probably eight there's more technology in a casio iron man wristwatch 00:16:51.840 --> 00:16:57.760 uh except but the problem is is that the church has not changed any excuse me this is a bad quote 00:16:57.760 --> 00:17:03.440 there's more technology in a casio iron man wristwatch than the apollo 20 years the church hadn't done anything different yet technology has grown immensely um going 00:17:15.920 --> 00:17:23.600 from smart technology in a wristwatch than how we got to the moon crazy crazy stuff church here's the heart of 00:17:23.600 --> 00:17:32.320 this digital community does not work like physical immunity so digital church is not going to work like 00:17:32.320 --> 00:17:37.680 physical church is going to work if you're a digital planner start start and think this don't recreate 00:17:37.680 --> 00:17:45.600 physical church on social media reimagine how the acts to church can operate on social media go back to 00:17:45.600 --> 00:17:53.920 that punch list of baptism care communion love all the things that were there the teaching the worship the 00:17:53.920 --> 00:18:02.400 praise giving uh producing leaders the site making hit all those things up and reimagine what that can be 00:18:02.400 --> 00:18:08.320 like on facebook look at some of the the pioneers that are in this area it's just even on facebook i'm 00:18:08.320 --> 00:18:16.400 talking um angela craig um hope city church pursuit church live there there's a number heart hearts like 00:18:16.400 --> 00:18:22.320 his uh dr john harris is is one that's that's come up in at least in my attention recently there are plenty of 00:18:22.320 --> 00:18:30.320 others that are out there forging away trying to get out there to recreate to reimagine what a church would 00:18:30.320 --> 00:18:36.000 be in that digital space and so there's a lot of options here for that now for for some of you digital 00:18:36.000 --> 00:18:42.640 ministry people uh that are working at physical churches let me challenge you with this every soul 00:18:42.640 --> 00:18:48.480 you connect with even those beyond your church's physical reach need to be cared for and need to be 00:18:48.480 --> 00:18:54.800 challenged spiritually you know so often i and i'm having these conversations with physical churches 00:18:54.800 --> 00:18:59.840 that are doing digital ministry they just come up with this big question mark because in with a 00:18:59.840 --> 00:19:06.240 physical church that's doing digital ministry very often the uh the physical ministry is feed the digital 00:19:06.240 --> 00:19:11.280 ministry is feeding into physical so you don't actually do discipleship you don't do disciple making 00:19:11.280 --> 00:19:15.920 you don't do church in digital space you do that in physical space digital is just the front door that 00:19:15.920 --> 00:19:20.080 feeds into physical there's really nothing wrong with that strategy as long as you put a little 00:19:20.080 --> 00:19:26.240 asterisk here and pay attention to hey what about those people that aren't within physical reach 00:19:26.240 --> 00:19:31.280 what are we doing with them are we helping them get connected with somebody else to for spiritual 00:19:31.280 --> 00:19:36.880 development for care for shepherding are we helping them find a church within their local region 00:19:36.880 --> 00:19:42.560 or are we taking that up on in digital space answer that question pay attention to that 00:19:43.440 --> more of like a satellite extension of it um and so what i would tell 00:20:43.360 --> 00:20:50.960 you is i i as a video director the tighter the better uh is is my gut on that because you're able to digital missionary and and it's kind of been some of my advice has been 00:22:32.560 --> 00:22:37.200 use whatever word works best with the people that you're talking with yeah maybe you're a digital
