And JustinTV ended up kind of getting into some illicit things and 00:05:12.740 --> 00:05:18.960 Twitch actually bought them out. And Twitch immediately started focusing on gamers. And Twitch is primarily 00:05:18.960 --> 00:05:28.660 where gamers hang out. It was almost all Let's Plays. So, people trying to grasp the idea of 00:05:28.660 --> 00:05:34.520 watching other people play video games was this monumental thing. It has become kind of a 00:05:34.520 --> 00:05:41.940 zeitgeist in culture now. But Twitch has actually evolved over the last probably, I don't know what, 00:05:42.020 --> 00:05:50.000 four or five years, Bubba, into becoming more of a just chatting sort of live stream. And now we have Twitch. And so, we have this weird clash of a fully formed gamer culture. Tell us a little bit about who you are. 00:11:44.980 --> 00:11:48.980 Tell us about what you're doing with Love Thy Nerd. 00:11:48.980 --> 00:11:58.980 Yeah. So, as previously mentioned, my name is Bubba Stalkap. I'm the CEO, president and founder of Love Thy Nerd, which is an organization that has a really easy to remember mission statement. 00:11:58.980 --> 00:12:01.980 We exist to be the love of Jesus to nerds and nerd culture. 00:12:01.980 --> 00:12:08.980 And we do that by being an example of and also training other people on how to better love and serve their nerdy neighbors. 00:12:08.980 --> 00:12:10.980 And we do it a variety of ways. 00:12:10.980 --> 00:12:13.980 Easiest way to break it down is in three separate categories. 00:12:13.980 --> 00:12:23.980 We have Intentional Community, which is started off as Facebook and then migrated into Discord, where we believe true relationship happens online is through Discord. 00:12:23.980 --> 00:12:28.980 We just set up to do that. If you don't have Discord, that's a really good place to start. 00:12:28.980 --> 00:12:33.980 I got a couple of great places that I could point to that doesn't begin and end with the Love Thy Nerd Discord. 00:12:33.980 --> 00:12:38.980 So, we've got Intentional Community. That's not just online, but also in real life. 00:12:38.980 --> 00:12:44.980 Whenever we're hanging out doing game nights and stuff like that, we want to be intentional about the time that we spend together. 00:12:44.980 --> 00:12:55.980 We also have Relational Outreach, which is us going to places, whether that's digitally online, playing games with people in spaces like, say, Destiny 2, World of Warcraft, stuff like that. 00:12:55.980 --> 00:13:00.980 Or, it's us going to what we call nerd culture events, which are conventions. 00:13:00.980 --> 00:13:07.980 Gen Con, Pax Unplugged, you know, 30, 40, 50, 60,000 of your closest friends, that kind of a deal. 00:13:07.980 --> 00:13:13.980 We go and hang out and love people well inside of booths where we will activate missionaries. 00:13:13.980 --> 00:13:20.980 We create actual mission opportunities for people who don't want to go to Nicaragua and hang a door or swing a hammer. 00:13:20.980 --> 00:13:28.980 They'd be more comfortable. Not that that's the be-all, end-all, but sometimes effective ministry does kind of start in a comfortable space. 00:13:28.980 --> 00:13:34.980 And so we give them a space where they're gifted and that they like, they have a shared affinity with people to go and serve. 00:13:34.980 --> 00:13:37.980 And we have those moments at nerd culture events. 00:13:37.980 --> 00:13:39.980 So that's our relational outreach. 00:13:39.980 --> 00:13:42.980 Then we also have thoughtful content, which is our website. 00:13:42.980 --> 00:13:51.980 We've got blogs on there. We've got resources, which are just really a compilation of blogs, articles, features. 00:13:51.980 --> 00:13:56.980 We have podcasts, YouTube shows, Twitches, all sorts of stuff. 00:13:56.980 --> 00:14:00.980 Anything that you could possibly think of, there's probably something on there about that. 00:14:00.980 --> 00:14:06.980 And so those are the three major things that we do in order to better love and serve our nerdy neighbors. 00:14:06.980 --> 00:14:08.980 And to help train other people how to do that as well. 00:14:10.980 --> 00:14:13.980 Okay, so let's back up even to that. 00:14:13.980 --> 00:14:21.980 By the way, I totally want to dig into nerd missionaries and what's involved with that. 00:14:21.980 --> 00:14:23.980 So much goodness, right? Are we nerds? something, it's like, "What's the thing that when you start talking about it, other people start zoning out?" 00:15:10.980 --> 00:15:12.980 That's the thing that you're actually a nerd about. 00:19:27.980 It's like, it's a sliding statistic, right? 00:19:27.980 --> 00:19:38.980 But the reason that is the statistic is because in 1986, a very small man named Mario Mario landed on U.S. trying to reach an older generation and people out there that are trying to reach a younger generation. 00:20:17.980 --> 00:20:26.980 We're trying to hit the middle point and train people on how to better love nerds from this spot so that they can love the people around them as well. 00:20:26.980 --> 00:20:37.980 So what type of people, organizations, like when you say you're trying to train people to love nerds, who are you trying to train? 00:20:37.980 --> 00:20:41.980 Like what's your ministry actually looking like? 00:20:41.980 --> 00:20:43.980 Who are you working with? 00:20:43.980 --> 00:20:46.980 So we're working with a couple of different organizations out there. 00:20:46.980 --> 00:20:52.980 We talked about Megazord and that's just an affectionate name that we came up with that works. 00:20:52.980 --> 00:21:02.980 But really what it is, is we're working with Digital Church Network on how to create a multiplication process that does this thing that I'm talking about. do we resource them best so that they can just affect the people in their vicinity? 00:21:15.980 --> 00:21:26.980 And so I've worked with Campus Crusade for Christ, now known as CRU, and varying versions of that because they're a different thing no matter where you look. 00:21:26.980 --> 00:21:33.980 We've worked with FCA, we've worked with an organization out of California called Urban Youth Because everybody moved off of all of that in-person stuff and had to go online, you know, per our U.S. government. 00:21:49.980 --> 00:21:53.980 And so how do you continue to be a church and love 00:24:41.980 What are some things that you've seen or maybe you're doing? 00:24:41.980 --> 00:24:43.980 Yeah, man, what a great question. 00:24:43.980 --> 00:24:46.980 Discipleship in and of itself is multiplication. 00:24:46.980 --> 00:24:52.980 And so just as a short background, I come from church, the church world. 00:24:52.980 --> 00:24:53.980 I didn't just attend church. 00:24:53.980 --> 00:24:59.980 I was a part of church staff for over 12 years at various churches in different capacities. 00:24:59.980 --> 00:25:02.980 And I spent five and a half of that as a youth pastor. 00:25:02.980 --> 00:25:06.980 And so I've seen a lot of things. 00:25:06.980 --> 00:25:09.980 And I've seen discipleship done right. 00:25:09.980 --> 00:25:11.980 And I've seen discipleship done wrong. 00:25:11.980 --> 00:25:15.980 And I think when it's done poorly, it's programming. 00:25:15.980 --> 00:25:18.980 We have a thing that exists at this time. 00:25:18.980 --> 00:25:21.980 When it's done correctly, it's life. 00:25:21.980 --> 00:25:23.980 We do life together. 00:25:23.980 --> 00:25:25.980 We're going to know things about people. 00:25:25.980 --> 00:25:27.980 We're going to be intentional with the time that we have 00:25:27.980 --> 00:25:30.980 and relational with the things that we actually do with that time. 00:25:30.980 --> 00:25:34.980 And so we take that because of our past experience, 00:25:34.980 --> 00:25:36.980 the staff here at Love Thy Nerd, 00:25:36.980 --> 00:25:40.980 we take that and allow that to inform what we do at Love Thy Nerd. 00:25:40.980 --> 00:25:44.980 And so we have a very organic platform on Discord 00:25:44.980 --> 00:25:48.980 where people can come together and talk about things and start stuff. 00:25:48.980 --> 00:25:50.980 But for people that want to go deeper, 00:25:50.980 --> 00:25:54.980 we first institute what I've coined as passive discipleship. 00:25:55.980 --> 00:25:58.980 That if you decide to hang out with me for any length of time, 00:25:58.980 --> 00:26:01.980 past the little bit of time when we're playing a game or whatever, 00:26:01.980 --> 00:26:05.980 you are going to see how I can best interpret 00:26:05.980 --> 00:26:08.980 how Jesus would or would not act in any given situation. 00:26:08.980 --> 00:26:09.980 I can't turn that off. 00:26:09.980 --> 00:26:11.980 I'm not going to turn it off. 00:26:11.980 --> 00:26:15.980 And so that's what you're going to experience is this passive discipleship. 00:26:15.980 --> 00:26:17.980 Active discipleship, we know that. 00:26:17.980 --> 00:26:21.980 That is, you're going to follow behind your rabbi so closely 00:26:21.980 --> 00:26:25.980 that his dust kicks up on the hem of your garment. 00:26:25.980 --> 00:26:26.980 That kind of stuff. 00:26:26.980 --> 00:26:30.980 And so for the people that want to move from A to B, 00:26:30.980 --> 00:26:34.980 that's where we have those missions outreach opportunities. 00:26:34.980 --> 00:26:38.980 That's the first actual legitimate step that people can take outside of volunteering 00:26:38.980 --> 00:26:40.980 and doing stuff like that. 00:26:40.980 --> 00:26:43.980 When you come on a mission trip with us, which that's exactly what it is. 00:26:43.980 --> 00:26:44.980 It's a mission trip. 00:26:44.980 --> 00:26:52.980 When you come with us, we teach you and train you the best possible way to be effective in the space where we're going to send you. 00:26:52.980 --> 00:26:54.980 That doesn't mean it's a blanket statement. 00:26:54.980 --> 00:26:55.980 It's going to work everywhere. 00:26:55.980 --> 00:26:56.980 It's not a magic bullet or anything like that. 00:26:56.980 --> 00:27:06.980 But we're going to train you on the effective ways to reach people inside of nerd culture and almost specifically in the place where we're going to send you. 00:27:06.980 --> 00:27:07.980 Maybe you're an introvert. 00:27:07.980 --> 00:27:09.980 Here's how to talk to people. have to train people how to do stuff like have a conversation. 00:27:18.980 --> 00:27:25.980 But rather than shaming them for not being this thing and fitting this model, we train them on how to do that. 00:27:25.980 --> 00:27:27.980 Hey, you're not going to know what to ask. 00:27:27.980 --> 00:27:33.980 Here are four things that you can ask people to get them talking about their favorite subject, which is themselves. 00:27:33.980 --> 00:27:35.980 So that's a small part of what we do. 00:27:35.980 --> 00:27:38.980 And then we tell them, hey, people are going to ask you. 00:27:38.980 --> 00:27:40.980 They're going to understand that you're a Christian at some point. 00:27:40.980 --> 00:27:42.980 They're going to understand this thing. 00:27:42.980 --> 00:27:44.980 And then they're going to have a whole bunch of questions for you. 00:27:44.980 --> 00:27:48.980 The biggest thing that we tell people is do not pretend like you know everything. 00:27:48.980 --> 00:27:52.980 You're not God's gift to mankind or even the people you're talking to. 00:27:52.980 --> 00:27:53.980 You're there to be a vessel. 00:27:53.980 --> 00:27:57.980 And if you don't have the answer, shut your tend to lean towards the latter and not the former when we're trying to be around people and care for people. 00:30:05.980 --> 00:30:09.980 And so we want people to feel as comfortable as they possibly can. 00:30:09.980 --> 00:30:15.980 Because we know that people have all these preconceived notions about Jesus and who he is. 00:30:15.980 --> 00:30:23.980 Movies, TV shows, videos, podcasts, music, anything that is an outside source. 00:30:23.980 --> 00:30:31.980 You put on top of that their personal experience, their first or second-hand experience of what Jesus and the church are. 00:30:31.980 --> 00:30:33.980 We don't discredit any of that. 00:30:33.980 --> 00:30:35.980 We take all that into account. 00:30:35.980 --> 00:30:44.980 And so if we're talking about how receptive people actually are to hearing the gospel, we take this approach. 00:30:44.980 --> 00:30:47.980 I told you one of our things was relational outreach. 00:30:47.980 --> 00:30:49.980 It is still outreach 100%. 00:30:49.980 --> 00:30:51.980 But it's predicated on relationship. 00:30:51.980 --> 00:31:02.980 Because we truly believe that in order to share that heavy truth, which the truth is that Jesus loves you, he died for you, and wants to spend the rest of eternity with you in a place that you could never imagine. 00:31:03.980 --> 00:31:07.980 He has died to reconcile you to him and his father. 00:31:07.980 --> 00:31:09.980 That is what the truth is. 00:31:09.980 --> 00:31:14.980 In order to share that with people, as good a news as that is, it's still difficult. 00:31:14.980 --> 00:31:16.980 And people are not receptive to it. 00:31:16.980 --> 00:31:20.980 Because so many Christians have treated people as projects. 00:31:20.980 --> 00:31:24.980 At LTN, one of our core values because it was highly political and all sorts of stuff. 00:36:11.980 --> 00:36:16.980 Anybody who's been in the church world for any amount of time can maybe speak a little bit to that. 00:36:16.980 --> 00:36:20.980 Um, it is, it is a more common story than it is uncommon. 00:36:20.980 --> 00:36:32.980 And so what ended up happening was we, we moved out here to central Texas and I got a job at a church that, uh, has one of these most staunch names that I've ever heard in any church world. 00:36:32.980 --> 00:36:34.980 And that's first Baptist church. 00:36:34.980 --> 00:36:36.980 It's first Baptist church in marble falls. 00:36:36.980 --> 00:36:47.980 And so like, yeah, I mean, yeah, right there, you know, it's like, and so, but I got a job as their first ever full-time technology director. 00:36:47.980 --> 00:36:52.980 And so I, I was kind of pivoting back into a passion of mine, which was tech. 00:36:52.980 --> 00:36:57.980 And the cool thing about it was that they'd never had anybody. 00:36:57.980 --> 00:37:00.980 The terrifying thing is that they'd never had anybody. 00:37:00.980 --> 00:37:08.980 And so everything that happened was either revolutionary or basically black magic. 00:37:08.980 --> 00:37:16.980 And so, um, we kind of worked from there and, and I kind of, I'd come out of full-time active ministry. 00:37:16.980 --> 00:37:23.980 And if you're on staff as, as a tech, you know, director or person or whatever, man, I hope that things are going well for you. 00:37:23.980 --> 00:37:42.980 For me, it was really difficult to actually lead in a ministerial position because you're so focused on the tech and making things run properly and making sure that the lights, the sound and the video and all sorts of stuff are running while also still moving in a direction that is, uh, you know, pushing the church forward and not holding it back. 00:37:42.980 --> 00:37:45.980 And so kind of a lot of pressure. 00:37:45.980 --> 00:37:48.980 Um, and the hours were grueling, absolutely grueling. 00:37:48.980 --> 00:37:57.980 Um, I, people think I'm joking when I say this, but there were multiple nights where I slept in my office and not because I was fighting with my wife. 00:37:57.980 --> 00:38:03.700 Like, you know, it was just things that needed to get done that there were not enough hours in the day to do them. 00:38:03.980 --> 00:38:14.760 And so, you know, you come, you come out of that, um, and not being able to like truly minister and stretch these legs and, you know, share with people and all sorts of stuff. 00:38:14.820 --> 00:38:24.820 And so I found myself involved in, in a, in an organization called game church that I was actually just looking for, Hey, I, God's calling me to start something. 00:38:24.940 --> 00:38:25.820 What would I call it? 00:38:25.820 --> 00:38:26.820 I Googled game church. 00:38:26.820 --> 00:38:26.820 Boom. 00:38:26.820 --> 00:38:31.820 There it was, they had already parked the domain and put up a website and all sorts of stuff. 00:38:31.820 --> 00:38:45.820 And so, um, I just got involved with them over time, started doing community management management with them going on, uh, you know, it didn't have this name at that time, but nerd culture mission trips, um, you know, and going to conventions and all sorts of stuff. 00:38:45.820 --> 00:38:46.820 Went to some of the biggest ones. 00:38:46.820 --> 00:38:50.820 We went to E3, um, that's starting to die down now, but we did that twice. 00:38:50.820 --> 00:38:51.820 It was really cool. 00:38:51.820 --> 00:38:54.820 Been all over the, all over the world, like doing stuff, right. 00:38:54.820 --> 00:38:55.820 It's crazy. 00:38:55.820 --> 00:39:06.820 And I told my church, I was like, look, man, I'm, I'm finding 2019, um, when we started, you know, really having conversations and pushing forward with stuff. 00:39:18.820 --> 00:39:23.820 And I was offered a full-time pastorate at a church plant that we were going to be doing. 00:39:23.820 --> 00:39:28.820 And the only caveat was that I would need to leave LTN and would I be willing to do that? 00:39:28.820 --> 00:39:29.820 And it wasn't malicious. 00:39:29.820 --> 00:39:32.820 Like they were giving me basically the exact thing that I was asking for. 00:39:32.820 --> 00:39:43.820 And I said, no, I, I could, I could probably be convinced to do less, uh, to, you know, uh, to not do more, but I'll never do less. 00:39:43.820 --> 00:39:43.820 Right. 00:39:43.820 --> 00:39:44.820 Like I'm not, I'm not quitting. 00:39:44.820 --> 00:39:46.820 This is, this is the thing that has carried me. 00:39:46.820 --> 00:39:49.820 And I really do feel like God is calling me in this. 00:39:49.820 --> 00:39:54.820 And so we started a plan and my church supported me 100%. 00:39:54.820 --> 00:39:59.820 They paid my salary for a year so that I had a ramp in order to, to go. 00:39:59.820 --> 00:40:09.820 Um, what I didn't know is that that ramp was going to be super flat, that that ramp was going to be 2020 and a pandemic and all sorts of stuff, but it didn't change the timeline. 00:40:09.820 --> 00:40:19.820 And my church has been crazy supportive ever since then, um, to the tune of in, in November of 2023, this year, they are hosting. 00:40:19.820 --> 00:40:40.820 They're the host space for our nerd culture ministry summit that we're putting on us and Lux digital and a bunch of other places are going to be kind of coming together to do this, to reach out to ministry leaders, um, and organizational leaders, whether they're do some radical stuff, but realize that you need to be humble while doing it and leading in this situation. 00:47:02.820 --> 00:47:05.820 And even for me saying, hey, publicly, I don't know this It's Friday, you go to prayer group, whatever it is. 00:52:40.820 --> 00:52:42.820 Like that was the expectation. 00:52:42.820 --> 00:52:45.820 You can just look in schools, right? 00:52:45.820 --> 00:52:47.820 It didn't have to be just even in nerd culture. 00:52:47.820 --> 00:52:53.820 Like schools, they used to keep those times available for students because they were going to be in church. 00:52:53.820 --> 00:52:57.820 Hey, we don't have Wednesday night activities because that's church night. 00:52:57.820 --> 00:53:02.820 Now we're starting to kind of move more into, you know, a secular way of thinking. 00:53:02.820 --> 00:53:06.820 And, you know, there's a lot that can be talked about on that. 00:53:06.820 --> 00:53:10.820 And I'm more than willing to talk through things with people about that. 00:53:10.820 --> 00:53:21.820 But it's, it's not necessarily, I don't think it's, it's, it's a bad thing per se, because I'm not a huge proponent of, of, of a papal state. 00:53:21.820 --> 00:53:24.820 Um, you know, national religion of, of Christianity. 00:53:24.820 --> 00:53:35.820 I think that, and I talked about this a little bit, you know, last night, um, when I was speaking at Lux, that if we're going to be true worshipers of God, that that means that we have to, we have to sacrifice. 00:53:35.820 --> 00:53:45.820 And we're called to worship in spirit and truth and worshiping in spirit means that we become that living sacrifice that we die daily to the things that we want, the desires that we have. 00:53:45.820 --> 00:53:47.820 And everything that we knew before is gone. 00:53:47.820 --> 00:53:52.820 Um, you know, we, we leave away, we leave those, those thoughts, those patterns, those everything. 00:53:52.820 --> 00:53:59.820 But I don't condemn people that don't subscribe to my belief system. 00:53:59.820 --> 00:54:11.820 And I think that that's something that pushes us forward is that rather than me standing out on a corner and yelling at somebody or real talk, standing out in front of a convention and telling all the people going inside that they're going to hell. 00:54:11.820 --> 00:54:24.820 Um, instead of doing that, we meet them, hear their stories, love them well, and encourage them to, to be better than they are, which is something that every single person on the planet should be doing. 00:54:24.820 --> 00:54:31.820 Nobody is done inside of the church, I would say that we're, we're feeling the effects of a post-Christian society in that some of the decisions that we have been making as a body are just different than what would
