it started became this much larger thing that i can't wait to share here's what i need to 00:01:53.460 --> 00:01:58.420 understand what is your one whether you're a physical church whether you're a once you figure out your one and once you understand the principle of the one for the 00:02:07.000 --> 00:02:12.380 individuals all of a sudden you're realizing your church has far greater impact than what it did with 00:02:12.380 --> 00:02:18.440 the one hour on sunday and i'm giving stuff away and really you don't need to hear it from me i want 00:02:18.440 --> 00:02:24.500 you to hear it from somebody who's lived this for 30 years of his life and so plus 30 plus years of his 00:02:24.500 --> 00:02:30.880 life i'm bringing in tim selick into the conversation tim uh you may not know he is one 00:03:50.540 --> 00:03:58.020 okay everybody here you go i planted a church in the fall of 1988 september of 1988 to to be specific 00:03:58.020 --> 00:04:04.300 in orange county california you know in the city of costa mesa and and that time and even to today 00:04:04.300 --> 00:04:11.580 costa mesa was not a growing community it was about 110 000 when we planted it's about 133 000 now 00:04:11.580 --> 00:04:18.940 and uh so we planted grew a church over 30 years um the church took so many different twists and turns 00:04:18.940 --> 00:04:25.580 because our community went from being primarily caucasian 93 caucasian seven percent other to 00:04:25.580 --> 00:04:33.420 realistically today 50 hispanic about 45 caucasian five percent other so there was a lot of shifts 00:04:33.420 --> 00:04:39.340 there but what we started as a church day one day one we started with this philosophy that we were going to 00:04:39.340 --> 00:04:45.180 be focused the way we said it is on somebody who was saying no to god and we wanted them to say yes 00:04:45.180 --> 00:04:51.500 to him through his son jesus christ so that was the focus it was a drum i beat from day one and i kept 00:04:51.500 --> 00:04:56.460 beating that drum all the way until i handed the baton of leadership off on its 30th anniversary 00:04:57.100 --> 00:05:06.540 in the fall or september of 2018 and i stepped up on the stadia staff they graciously allowed me to be a 00:05:06.540 --> 00:05:15.260 part of the organization to encourage people who were and are where i was as a planter so i get the 00:05:15.260 --> couple months before launch to roughly two years after 00:05:28.700 --> 00:05:35.340 launch so that's me one of the things that i love about tim is when you start to have conversations with him you story if i could uh if that's okay with you um that's what i'd like to do 00:06:06.220 --> 00:06:11.420 it so um and the cool part is emily was the one who encouraged me to share this story so at least i know 00:06:11.420 --> 00:06:17.820 one person out in the digital world that says this was a good deal so here we go um i actually 00:06:17.820 --> 00:06:22.780 when i moved out here to costa mesa i didn't realize i was like right next to the ocean i mean duh 00:06:22.780 --> 00:06:26.540 well um there was a period in my ministry where i needed something as a hobby because i didn't have 00:06:26.540 --> 00:06:32.620 any so a guy said why don't you take up sailing and i did and i i really love it and then i got into 00:06:32.620 --> 00:06:39.740 sailboat racing and i love it and um one time we were actually in a sailboat race very very windy race 00:06:39.740 --> 00:06:44.140 participating off the coast of santa barbara california there's these islands called the 00:06:44.140 --> 00:06:50.620 channel islands and we were going between two of them santa cruz island anacapa island and um what 00:06:50.620 --> 00:06:56.220 happened was as we were sailing between it the wind picked up so much and what you try to do on those 00:06:56.220 --> 00:07:01.260 islands you try to get close to them because you could actually speed up you know and you go faster 00:07:01.260 --> 00:07:05.900 well what happened was on that day some some boats at least one boat got way too close and what they 00:07:05.900 --> 00:07:12.860 didn't realize is there's rock outcroppings that you can't see and uh i'm at the helm of the boat i was 00:07:12.860 --> 00:07:18.940 on and i hear this distress signal it's like 9-1-1 over the water okay and one of the sailboats was 00:07:18.940 --> 00:07:23.580 literally in trouble it got too close to the island and some boats began to respond they broke their 00:07:23.580 --> 00:07:28.860 course responded to the dress distress signal but they soon realized they didn't have what they needed 00:07:28.860 --> 00:07:33.420 on their boat and their boat wasn't really adept at trying to get to those people so they abandoned 00:07:33.420 --> 00:07:38.460 going for the people and then to shorten the story some of the people they died that day at the sea 00:07:39.100 --> 00:07:43.900 and so after that what i did was is i actually did some research on boating um i don't know if you 00:07:43.900 --> 00:07:50.620 know this but a long time ago in new england there were some societies actually called rescue societies 00:07:50.620 --> 00:07:57.340 that popped up they were quite popular and what happened was these like adventurous men and women 00:07:57.340 --> 00:08:02.940 went out and they would join them because they themselves were once rescued as sailors or boaters 00:08:02.940 --> 00:08:07.500 and what did they do they'd go out in the atlantic ocean they'd rescue boats people were in trouble 00:08:07.500 --> 00:08:11.260 they'd bring them back to dry land and that was a matter of course for them folks did this 00:08:11.980 --> 00:08:16.700 and the people felt burdened for them and so they kept doing it well after these rescue attempts what 00:08:16.700 --> 00:08:22.300 would happen was they would come back together as a rescue outfit and they would then the cells recover 00:08:22.300 --> 00:08:27.660 they'd share meals they'd share stories and yet because they knew what it was like to be rescued 00:08:27.660 --> 00:08:31.180 they'd get back in the boat and they'd go back out and then they'd come back and they'd share some 00:08:31.180 --> 00:08:37.660 more meals more stories some more drinks and what put place over time was is these rescue societies 00:08:37.660 --> 00:08:42.300 got tired of rescuing they love the meals they love the camaraderie they love the bonding 00:08:42.860 --> 00:08:49.980 but they began are you ready for this they began yacht clubs okay what what began today as the modern 00:08:49.980 --> 00:08:55.820 american yacht club in many cases started in new england they emerged out of rescue societies it began 00:08:55.820 --> 00:09:01.900 from groups of people who were into rescuing people and after a while they said you know what let's just 00:09:01.900 --> 00:09:08.380 chill let's enjoy the meals let's enjoy the drinks let's enjoy all this and just relax and what you read 00:09:08.380 --> 00:09:14.140 about those stories is is that after a while a few of them they they a lot of them didn't leave the 00:09:14.140 --> 00:09:19.580 comforts of the yacht club but eventually over time a new group of them usually people who were rescued 00:09:19.580 --> 00:09:24.060 they would get the burden again they'd leave the comfort of the yacht club and they would go out again 00:09:24.060 --> 00:09:29.100 and rescue people and save people and they would do this all the while their friends were eating 00:09:29.100 --> 00:09:34.460 and drinking and fellowshipping they'd go and what's important i think for all of us on this podcast 00:09:34.460 --> 00:09:43.340 me first included we just need to understand something the church is not a yacht club the church is not a 00:09:43.340 --> 00:09:50.380 place where we sit in lounge chairs sip our drinks eat good food and forget all the people out there 00:09:50.380 --> 00:09:56.940 who are perishing the church is a rescue society it's a rescue culture and so jeff you asked me the 00:09:56.940 --> 00:10:03.900 question where does the one come from okay so i'm from luke 15 and and this is a passage that i mean 00:10:03.900 --> 00:10:09.420 emily knows by heart you know it by heart anybody listening to this who's in church you know the 00:10:09.420 --> 00:10:16.380 passage by heart okay it says there um in that passage that tax collectors and other notorious sinners 00:10:16.380 --> 00:10:23.100 often came to jesus to listen to him teach that's what i'm reading straight from the scriptures now 00:10:23.100 --> 00:10:27.980 parenthetically i'm wondering how many of you who are listening right now how many of you are like jesus 00:10:27.980 --> 00:10:34.140 and how many of you right now have or will have these sorts of people coming to hear you teach 00:10:34.140 --> 00:10:40.300 notorious sinners okay and and tax collectors let me tell you before warrant if you have them come 00:10:40.300 --> 00:10:43.580 you're going to be in a lot of trouble with all the religious church growing people in your church 00:10:43.580 --> 00:10:48.940 just letting you know that right now okay and and and so you just need to know that because it's no 00:10:48.940 --> 00:10:53.980 different and then so jesus he made up this story for the pharisees and the teachers of religious law 00:10:53.980 --> 00:11:00.380 they were complaining that he was associating with the the the sinners and even eating with them can 00:11:00.380 --> 00:11:05.100 you believe it so here's what he said he told him a story if a man has 100 sheep and one of them gets 00:11:05.100 --> 00:11:11.100 lost what will he do won't he leave the 99 others in the wilderness and go search for the one that's 00:11:11.100 --> 00:11:17.020 lost until he finds in other words jesus left the yacht club and all the comforts and he went back in 00:11:17.020 --> 00:11:21.980 the boat for the one person who was perishing that's where the concept of the one comes from 00:11:21.980 --> 00:11:28.220 i love it i love your story and i've seen that story and the way it's hidden straight to the heart 00:11:28.220 and are real familiar with places and houses of 00:11:40.780 --> 00:11:48.620 worship that feel really comfy and cozy and being a rescue society seems really risky and is not 00:11:48.620 --> question to find the one that you could actually 00:12:24.860 --> 00:12:31.900 ask and here's why because um if you go back to jesus story in luke 15 and we all know the story so 00:12:31.900 --> 00:12:37.900 well i mean it's like we could almost you know i've heard so many people just say 99 one 99 one well 00:12:37.900 --> 00:12:44.700 one of the main principles of jesus this the concept of the one must become personal before it comes 00:12:44.700 --> 00:12:51.420 organizational i mean if you just look at the story if a man and i would insert in there woman has 100 00:12:51.420 --> 00:13:00.060 sheep it's man singular what will he do what will she do won't he leave the 99 and go out in the 00:13:00.060 --> 00:13:05.020 wilderness search for the one who's lost until he finds it it's a critical story for every church 00:13:05.020 --> 00:13:11.500 leader every church planter every pastor understand and what what i what i'm very passionate about is 00:13:11.500 --> 00:13:17.980 evangelism that's made its way into our churches as a program um which is really at the heart of it all 00:13:17.980 --> 00:13:28.940 going after the one um it's got to be a personal conviction and passion that is born out of the reality 00:13:28.940 --> 00:13:39.980 that i too emily diaz jeffrey you too have been rescued i mean like okay so pastors teach on tithing 00:13:39.980 --> 00:13:45.660 right and um like this is like like a pastor who teaches on tithing and does not give is basically 00:13:45.660 --> 00:13:52.220 saying do as i do not as i say right what why do we give because god needs our money no freaking way 00:13:52.220 --> 00:14:00.380 god doesn't need our money okay um we give out an abundantly grateful heart that jesus he gave it 00:14:00.380 --> 00:14:08.540 all and for me to return a portion back is the least i could to display my thankfulness and gratitude 00:14:09.100 --> 00:14:13.980 tithing ought to be a personal conviction and passion for a christian long questions you've heard me say this emily one of the first 00:14:41.260 --> 00:14:47.500 questions i'll ask is show me your giving records because if you're not willing to do that 00:14:48.940 --> it's not a building okay it's not a digital place it's not a physical place it's it's people who are 00:16:19.580 --> 00:16:23.740 gathered and this is what he says if it's okay i'm gonna read it pray pray that i might proclaim it clearly as i should then he says to them that's that's you emily 00:16:34.380 --> 00:16:42.780 me tim you jeff he says to us be wise in the way you act toward outsiders understand the the the the concept of the time and conversations very different for how we see it in 00:18:00.620 --> 00:18:07.260 our day and age conversations take place in in in personal different devices um on routers um oh geez okay 00:18:27.980 --> 00:18:34.700 so but anyway um but we've become a chatting culture these days it's like we're no longer a conversational 00:18:34.700 acquaintances now let me say there's nothing wrong with 00:18:49.260 --> 00:18:55.500 chatting because it can lead to a conversation but often what i see these days for people who say they message on evangelism we go oh i'll talk to the barista about jesus 00:19:11.020 --> 00:19:18.220 come to my church come to my church is there any relationship no is there any desire to have a 00:19:18.220 --> 00:19:29.980 relationship in all reality no but i did the chat it was a quick superficial engagement um but but it's 00:19:29.980 --> 00:19:36.940 just a chat it didn't lead anywhere and um and i think sometimes it doesn't lead to conversations 00:19:36.940 --> 00:19:43.980 because did you see that colossians where it says always be full of grace so our lead card in any all
